Poon Hill Trek is an easy and beginner-friendly trek in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It is one of the most popular easy treks and is perfect for anyone who wants to see the beautiful Himalayan peaks and the sunrise view in a few days. It takes 4 days to complete the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, starting and ending at Pokhara. The reward of the trek is clear views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

The first few days can be a little hard because the trail goes steeply uphill and the altitude slowly increases. The climb from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri has about 3,000 stone steps, which can be tough for beginners. But with slow walking, proper rest, and hydration, the trek can be done without much problem.

For those who have trekked before, the route feels simple, while new trekkers may find it a bit difficult. Overall, it is a safe and enjoyable journey that gives amazing mountain views and is a great start for longer treks like Ghorepani to Annapurna Base Camp and other longer treks as well.

Factors Contributing to Poon Hill Trek Difficulty

Average 5 hours of Walking Each Day

The trek involves approximately 22–24 hours of walking in total. This can change depending on the trail and the walking speed. On easier sections, you might walk 6 to 7 hours, while on steeper climbs, you could walk for around 4 hours. The average walking time on the trek is about 5 hours each day. Walking around for 5 hours daily gives enough time to rest, enjoy the scenery, and take photos along the way.

Weather Conditions by Season

Each season has its own uniqueness and different experiences on the Poon Hill Trek. Spring and Autumn are the most popular times because the weather is stable and the skies are clear, which gives great mountain views.

Also, note that the weather on the trek is unpredictable, as it can change quickly at any time of the year. Trekkers should be ready for warm, rainy, dry, or cold conditions, depending on the season and altitude.

Risk of Altitude Sickness

Poon Hill Viewpoint lies at 3,210 m above sea level, which is the highest point of the trek. The chance of altitude sickness is low, but some trekkers may experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness at high altitudes above 2500 m.

This condition is called Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and can include headache, nausea, dizziness, or shortness of breath. To reduce such symptoms, you can walk slowly, stay hydrated, and rest properly. As you steep upward, the level of oxygen starts decreasing, and your body may feel uncomfortable.

Altitude (meters)Possible SymptomsPrecaution
1,500 m – 2,000 mRareStay hydrated, normal trekking pace
2,000 m – 2,800 mMild headache, slight fatigueTake breaks, walk slowly

Teahouses Conditions on the Trail

During the peak season, teahouses can become crowded, and solo trekkers may have trouble finding a room. It is best to book in advance if you are trekking during busy months. Some popular stops like Ghorepani and Poon Hill get fully booked quickly, so early planning is important.

Teahouse accommodation usually has a simple twin-sharing bed and meals like dal bhat, noodles, or soup. Most teahouses also have basic toilets and warm drinks. The facilities are simple but enough to rest, eat, and enjoy while experiencing the mountain lifestyle.

In villages like Ulleri, Ghorepani, and Tadapani, you can stay in teahouses and enjoy homemade meals made with local ingredients. In the evenings, trekkers often gather around the fireplace to share stories and relax. The warm hospitality and simple village life make the stay as memorable as the trek itself.

Ways to Minimize the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek Difficulty

Cheering group at Poon hill
Cheering group at Poon hill
  • Practice Short Hikes: Go on short walks or local hikes before the trek. It helps your body get used to walking for 7 to 8 hours each day during the journey. You can start with trails that have gentle slopes and gradually increase the distance and elevation. Practicing with different weather conditions can also prepare you for rain, wind, or chilly mornings on the trail.
  • Maintain Moderate Fitness: Do regular walking, jogging, or hiking before the trek. It strengthens your body to handle long hours of walking and steep climbs. Include exercises that improve leg strength, such as squats, and add some cardio workouts like cycling or swimming to boost stamina.
  • Use Trekking Poles: They help you keep balance on uneven trails, reduce pressure on your knees, and make climbing and descending easier. Poles can also improve your posture, distribute weight more evenly, and reduce fatigue during long hikes.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water (preferably 2-3 litres) throughout the day to maintain energy and prevent dehydration. Carry a reusable water bottle or hydration pack and sip regularly rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. Avoid excessive caffeine or alcohol, as they can dehydrate you.
  • Daily check weather conditions: Stay updated about the trekking area. Check the weather and temperature regularly so you can be prepared for changing conditions. Learn about trail closures, local regulations, and altitude-related precautions. Being aware of daylight hours, terrain difficulty, and seasonal variations will help you plan each day safely and enjoyably.
  • Wear Proper Gear: Comfortable hiking shoes and layered clothing make your trek safer and easier. You can choose the shoes with good grip and ankle support to handle uneven and slippery trails. You must not forget accessories like a hat, gloves, and sunglasses to protect against wind, sunlight, and cold. Proper gear prevents any injuries and makes the trek more enjoyable.
  • Follow a Balanced Diet: During your trek, you must eat nutritious meals. Include basic foods that are rich in carbohydrates, proteins, and vitamins, like rice, lentils, eggs, fruits, and vegetables. Avoid skipping meals or relying only on snacks. A balanced diet helps your body adapt better to changing altitudes and physical effort.
  • Take an acclimatization day: Even though the Poon Hill Trek doesn’t require acclimatization, the elevation change can still affect some trekkers, especially beginners. You can spend a day in Ghorepani or nearby villages to let your body adjust to the altitude, which helps prevent mild discomfort. Proper acclimatization keeps your energy steady and makes the trek more enjoyable.
  • Hire a Guide or Porter: Hiring a guide and a porter can make your trek safer and more enjoyable. A guide provides local knowledge, helps with navigation, and shares information about the trails. Likewise, a porter carries your heavy bag so that you can enjoy the trek even more and reduce all the physical strain. This is especially helpful on steep or crowded sections of the trail.

Plan your Poon Hill trek with NAT

Poon Hill Trek is a short and beautiful trek that anyone can do with a basic level of fitness. The trail has some steep climbs, but it’s not too hard if you walk slowly and take breaks. With proper preparation, you can enjoy stunning mountain views and local culture. The short duration and moderate difficulty make it possible to complete the trek comfortably while enjoying every moment in the Annapurna Region in Nepal.

It’s a great choice for beginners and a perfect start for future high mountain treks. You can also do another popular trekking route like the Ghandruk Ghorepani Circuit Trek in just 3 days. Another option is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, which is a longer and more challenging trek with stunning views of the mountains.
