Everest Base Camp Trek Overview
Everest Base Camp trek is a world-famous journey in Nepal’s Khumbu Valley. The trek to EBC takes trekkers through the surreal beauty of the Sagarmatha region and to the base camp of the mighty world’s highest peak, Mount Everest. The journey is renowned for its mesmerizing mountain views, unique Sherpa culture, and the diverse terrain of Sagarmatha National Park.
The 14 days Everest Base Camp trek reaches the highest point at 5,555 meters (18,225 ft) at Kala Patthar. From the top of Kala Patthar, you will see jaw-dropping views of some of the tallest peaks on the planet, including Everest (8,848.86 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Nuptse (7,861 m), and Pumori (7,165 m).
The Everest Base Camp Trekking adventure begins in Kathmandu, from where you take a flight to Lukla (Tenzing-Hillary Airport). From Lukla, you will follow the Dudh Koshi River and head to Phakding before entering Sagarmatha National Park. You will then cross several suspension bridges to reach Namche Bazaar, the biggest trade hub in the Everest region. At Namche, you will spend an extra day to rest and explore nearby famous spots like Everest View Hotel and Khumjung Village.
Continuing the journey, you’ll follow the Imja River and make your way to Tengboche, where the famous Tengboche Monastery offers amazing views of Mt. Ama Dablam (6,856m). After that, the EBC trek trail leads to Dingboche. At Dingboche, you’ll take another rest day and hike to Nangkartshang Peak (5,160m) for acclimatization.
The next part of the trek takes you to Lobuche, then alongside the Khumbu Glacier to reach Gorakshep. Gorakshep is your final stop before base camp. A short hike from Gorakshep leads you to Mount Everest Base Camp, where you’ll be rewarded with up-close views of glaciers and towering peaks like Pumori and Nuptse.
One of the biggest highlights is yet to come. The next day, early in the morning, you will climb to Kala Patthar. From this viewpoint, you’ll witness a panoramic sunrise over Mt. Everest and many other Himalayan giants. From here, you begin your return journey, retracing your steps through Pheriche, Tengboche, and Namche Bazaar, and finally flying back to Kathmandu from Lukla.
