After waiting in the camp for a few hours, he realized Francys hadn’t come back, so he returned with oxygen and supplies to seek for her. Francys Arsentiev
John Yarbro and Marina Garrett welcomed Francys Yarbro Distefano-Arsentiev into the world on January 18, 1958 in Honolulu, Hawaii. She attended the University of Louisville for her undergraduate studies after growing up in both the United States and Switzerland. From the International School of Business Management in Phoenix, she later earned a Master’s degree.
She was employed as an accountant in the turbulent ski resort of Telluride, Colorado, in the 1980s. In Telluride, Francys got to know renowned Russian mountaineer Sergei Arsentiev. They got along great and got married in 1992.
In his home Russia, Sergei was already known for his climbing prowess. He became famous by acing the five tallest peaks in the old Soviet Union, earning him the nickname “Snow Leopard” among his fellow countrymen. When she first met Sergei, Francys had never taken climbing seriously. She absorbed his energizing and potent energy, nevertheless.
With her adored spouse, Francys thus discovered something of a niche: pushing the boundaries of ever-higher heights. Many Russian mountains were scaled by the couple, and Arsentiev was the first American woman to ski down Elbrus.
She and Sergei devised a strategy for her to become the first American woman to summit Everest without using supplemental oxygen, using the West Buttress of Denali as a testing ground.
On the journey
Francys was different from the majority of high-altitude climbers who attempted to ascend Everest without assistance. When he called his mother the following morning to tell her about the dream, she put his worries to rest by informing him that she was leaving on an adventure to conquer Mount Everest. She pushed on going on the trip in spite of his reservations, telling him, “I have to do this.”
Francys and Sergei Arsentiev attempted to conquer Everest in 1998. They arrived at the North Col on May 17, and the next day they ascended to a height of 7700 meters. Similarly, they reached an altitude of 8,203 meters on May 19 and reported that they were in good health. They planned to begin their summit attempt on May 20 at one in the morning.
On May 20
On May 20, though, their headlamps broke, and they were unable to continue. Moreover, on May 21, they made it only 50–100 meters before giving up.
They completed their final ascent on May 22 and arrived at the peak. Due to the late hour and the arduous journey, they were obliged to spend the night above 8,000 meters. They had been without oxygen for more than 72 hours at this point while in the “Death Zone,” which is the region above 8,000 meters. The human body starts to gradually deteriorate as soon as it hits this region. In their battle for existence, cells start to literally eat away at one another.
On May 23, an Uzbek crew that was descending the top discovered a body along the way. They discovered Francys half-conscious, suffering from cold, frostbite, and oxygen deprivation. They gave her oxygen and lowered her as far as they could until they were too exhausted to do so anymore.

Francis was probably too hypothermic by this point for the base camp’s available care. The Uzbek team placed her to rest because they had run out of options and started their descent. At this altitude, carrying one’s own weight is nearly impossible, let alone the weight of an injured climber.
Climbers Ian Woodall and Cathy O’Dowd came found what they initially believed to be a frozen body wearing a purple jacket later that day as they tried the summit. When they looked more closely, they discovered that the woman was genuinely alive and trembling wildly. Two climbers came over to offer assistance.
They recognized Francys Arsentiev, who had earlier stopped by their tent for tea at base camp, as the purple-clad climber. O’Dowd recalled that Arsentiev spoke frequently about her son and house and “wasn’t an obsessive sort of climber.” But once more, being so high up on the mountain, they could only offer little assistance.
